We are often asked this question at Plymouth Tree People! It’s a difficult one to answer because it’s so good to observe nature in action and children can particularly learn from growing seeds. However, several precautions are needed before moving seedlings to a permanent home. Could there be any tiny pests or diseases hiding in the root ball? How is the tree likely to grow; tall or short, straight or crooked? Can we be sure that it has no unwanted hybridisation with parents of different species? Once satisfied, any potential landowners will need to be convinced they are getting good stock. This takes time and effort, and practically, it is usually worth paying the extra to buy guaranteed stock from accredited nurseries. If you have something special, however, do tell us about it and photos are always welcome.
