New Tool Now Available Thanks To The Woodland Trust

The Woodland Trust has launched the UK Tree Equity Score!

Tree Equity Score is a free, interactive tool that maps access to urban trees in the UK. It calculates a score out of 100 for every neighbourhood - the lower the score, the greater priority for tree planting. The score is based on various socio-economic factors such as population age, air pollution, average temperature as well as, of course, canopy cover. These values along with the building density are used to calculate the target canopy cover for each area.

Search the map today and find out the Tree Equity Score for your neighbourhood.

The Woodland Trust has been working with American Forests and The Centre for Sustainable Healthcare to create this tool for anyone to use and benefit from. It’s a work in progress, and the hope is that the figures become more and more accurate as more data is gathered.

Tree Equity Score makes it easy to identify urban areas lacking in trees and will help target action to improve the cover in these areas. Every community across the UK deserves access to trees but the unequal distribution of trees in our towns and cities means that some communities are losing out. 84% of people in the UK live in urban areas, so equitable access to nature for health and well being is vital.

Achieving tree equity across the UK could sequester 500,000 tonnes of carbon! This is equivalent to removing a quarter million petrol-powered vehicles from the road each year.
