Tree Warden Open Session at the Family Tree Field

Last Saturday, to celebrate National Tree Week some of our amazing volunteers braved a very chilly morning to run a special open session at the Family Tree Field in Central Park. Young and old made it along to offer their help to carry out essential upkeep to the trees in the field which were first planted by Plymouth Tree People in 2004. Volunteers who helped mulching and replacing trees which have been lost were rewarded with festive mince pies!

The concept behind the Family Tree Field is simple. People who wanted to remember a loved one or mark a special occasion had the opportunity to do so and the lovely Family Tree Field is the result. The scheme is also documented by Plymouth Tree People as a permanent record of the trees and the loved ones being remembered. 

Not unexpectedly, the scheme was very popular, and the field reached capacity by 2022. We are looking for ways to extend the scheme and, working with Plymouth City Council, we hope a new site can be found to be transformed by trees.

Chris Hunt, who ran the session, was delighted with the turn out and said it was a really enjoyable morning. Chris added that while the soil there is hard to work with and not ideal, the mulching programme is really helping. He hopes that next summer he will have even more trees to keep watered!
