Plymouth Tree People are always keen for opportunities to plant street trees in Plymouth, and luckily, with the support of the Plymouth & South Devon Community Forest, we were able to manage a project to reinstate trees into 6 of the empty tree pits on Durnford Street, outside the flats.
We spoke with residents who were really positive about the trees being replaced, as long as they didn't blow over and land on any cars, which one of the previous trees had done! So we decided to go for a tree, slightly unusual for a street tree, but a variety which is more than happy in a windy coastal location - Tamarisk tetrandra. This small, deciduous tree will not get too big or dense, so will not block views from the windows and in the spring, it becomes almost completely covered in pink blossom.
Being a complicated project, we worked with Glendale to carry out the work and the guys couldn't have been more helpful. The original trees were planted in concrete rings, which might be why they were able to fall over, so it was decided that large holes should be drilled into the rings to help the new tree anchor themselves.
This scheme was supported by the Plymouth & South Devon Community Forest project through the ‘Trees for Climate’ fund as part of the Department for Environment, Food, & Rural Affairs (Defra) ‘Nature for Climate’ fund.
If you live nearby and would like to help keep these trees watered take a look at our Tree Watering Heroes scheme.
