Watering trees is vital during the summer months

Some of our trees have watering bags
Watering young trees is crucial for their survival. By agreeing to be a Watering Hero you are making a pledge to water your young tree when it's needed and in doing so you are giving your tree the best chance to establish!

A guide to being a Watering Hero
The most important thing to remember is to stay safe so do not step into the road or stand very close to the curb if your tree is a street tree. In particular be mindful that some vehicles can have large wing mirrors. If a watering bag is fitted, it will always be possible to access it from the pavement side – there should be no need to go into the road.
Most of our tree bags can hold up to 75 litres (or in some cases 100 litres) and they will release the water in them over approximately 3 – 5 hours. They do not need filling to the top but putting in a good amount will give the tree a good soak and encourage the roots to grow down.
Filling a 10-litre watering can from the tap costs only 2p so a bag-full would cost less than 10p. But, water collected in butts or old bath water is just as good for the trees and costs nothing. If you would like a Plymouth Tree People watering can then tick the box on the Watering Hero form and we will have one delivered.
It’s difficult to give young trees too much water! Ideally, they need up to 50 litres of water a week but every drop helps and even a couple of bucketsful can make a big difference. Where paid-for contractors are involved, they can only satisfy a tree’s basic requirement and whatever extra you can provide will help them thrive, rather than just survive.
