Let's help the maple in the square!
Plymouth Tree People have just launched a fundraiser!
At the end of last year, we became aware of a situation in Sir John Hawkins Square.
One lovely, mature Norway Maple stands in the square, in between a stump and a place another tree had not long died - the last maple standing. A quick look on Streetview reveals that the square used to be paved, but a few years ago it was tarmacked and it was after this happened that the other 2 maples died.
We want to help the last tree, since we think that it vastly improves the square - just imagine this space without it!
We are raising money to employ a contractor to remove some of the tarmac around the tree, to give the tree some literal breathing room and give it access to much more rainwater.
Please donate if you can afford to. A link to the fundraiser is here:

We have also been speaking with businesses around the square - Kitty O'Hanlons, Cosmic Kitchen and dBs Plymouth, who are all offering their support. Once we raise the money and get the work done, we hope to organise a volunteer day to tidy the square up, remove some overgrown plants and install a bench around the tree, to keep people from walking on the newly made opening, and give us all somewhere to sit and enjoy the tree.
Please share details of our fundraiser with anyone you think would like to help!
We'd like to thank Plymouth Waterfront Partnership and Plymouth City Council for their help so far.
